Term 2, Week 7 Information

 Dear Parents,

We hope you had a lovely extra long weekend and enjoyed some of that sunshine!

Just a few pieces of information for the upcoming fortnight...

Homework

On Tuesday we will be sending home the Year Two fluency grid with this fortnights focus sounds and tricky words. Have a look at our blog post titled 'Week 4 Information' which shows you how you can use this at home to increase your child's reading fluency. We have also included all of the spelling lists for your information on the back of the fluency grid. The pink list πŸ’“ is the target for Year Two from our InitiaLit program. Please feel free to use these lists at home to increase your child's spelling abilities. Have a look at our Fluency grids and spelling lists below to see our focus sounds πŸ€“

We are reviewing the 'oa, ow' and 'ue, ew' as we have found this was an area that the children were still getting a little tricked on.

Learning Intentions

English:

This week we are learning the spelling sounds 'oa' as in goat, 'ow' as in blow and 'ue' as in true and 'ew' as in new. The tricky words for this fortnight are - caught, really, bought, animal.

Last week, we learnt that informative texts can not only be about animals but can also be about people, things, places and events. We had a go at writing our very own text about Dunsborough, an animal, and even something we can ride like a bike or scooter. We began to practise having a go at writing our very own informative texts by creating a planner and using key words on our planner to help us plan our story. Once we completed our planner, we used these key words to put into sentences within our text.

This week we will begin our text innovation of our mentor text 'The Trabbit'. The children will be creating their very own hybrid animal so be sure to ask them about it πŸ‡πŸ―πŸ¨πŸ»πŸ

We have also been learning within the InitaLit program the difference between an imaginative text, informative text and a persuasive text.

Maths

Last week, we continued focusing on 2D and 3D shapes. We focused on how to draw different shapes and identifying the features of a given shape - faces, corners and edges. We will be continuing this focus for the remainder of Week 7 and will be completing the post test on Thursday.

In Week 8, we will begin to look at chance. We will be learning to:

  • Identify practical activities and everyday events that involve chance. Describe outcomes as ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’ and identify some events as ‘certain’ or ‘impossible’ (ACMSP047)

Seesaw - Maths

I hope you are all enjoying the Seesaw posts that have showcased your child's learning and understanding of all the learning areas we are covering in class. You would have noticed that a Math sample was posted last fortnight that demonstrated your child's knowledge of time within the Measurement and Geometry strand. Both of the Year Two teachers have noticed that this area is something we will need to revisit in Term Four as many children are still developing their understanding of this tricky concept.

We would absolutely love if you could also practise telling time to the quarter hours and ask your child to give reason For example: I know it is quarter to 5 or 4:45 because the the minute hand is a quarter until the hour of 5 o'clock and the 45 minutes represents the 45 minutes that have passed since 4 o'clock.

If you have any questions or queries, please email me

Have a great week seven!

Mrs. Wendelin
