Week five...still alive!! 🤩

Good afternoon parents,

I hope you had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the cooler change on Saturday. Just a few pieces of information for week five...

Homework

Today we sent home the Year Two fluency grid with this fortnights focus sounds and tricky words. Have a look at our last blog post which shows you how you can use this at home to increase your child's reading fluency. We have also included all of the spelling lists for your information on the back of the fluency grid. The pink list 💓 is the target for Year Two from our InitiaLit program. Please feel free to use these lists at home to increase your child's spelling abilities. Have a look at our Fluency grids and spelling lists below to see our focus sounds 🤓

Prayer Vigil for Ukraine

OLC families, the situation in Ukraine is one of deep concern, and we have a number of families at our school with direct ties to the country. I invite you to join us for a 30 minute silent prayer vigil on Wednesday afternoon at 4.00pm on the school oval to pray for world peace, and to comfort our families. Please feel free to bring a battery operated light source as a symbol of hope. All are welcome.

Kind Regards, Amie Meyer.

Friendology

This week we started our Friendology lessons as a year two cohort. This week we learnt about the four friendship facts and how we can be a good friend. Have a look below at the four facts we will revise each week.

This Friday we are asking the children to bring in a soft cuddly toy no bigger than 20cm for our Friendology lesson. This can be something like a beanie boo, small figurine or bear that will help the children role play freindship scenarios with their cuddly friend. We will be focusing on how we can make new friends this week and ask people to play with them. Please note this will be needed for THIS FRIDAY 4TH OF MARCH.

If you would like, we also have a FREE parent sign up (as we are a Friendology school) which provides some wonderful language and skills you can use at home to help your child through any friendship issues they may be having. Click on the link below to become a URstrong family!

Religion

Lent begins this Wednesday with our Ash Wednesday liturgy. Due to COVID we will need to conduct our own classroom liturgy  and we will also be distributing the ashes to the children. If you see myself or your child with a black cross on our heads, please know this is a part of our Ash Wednesday service where we signify the beginning of the 40 days of Lent before Easter. We will be talking to the children about something they might like to give up eg. their favourite video game/lolly OR take something up eg. making their bed/ loading the dishwasher.

Learning Intentions

English:

This week we are learning the spelling sounds 'ear' as in ear/'eer' as in cheer,  'are' as in beware/ 'air' as in hair, contractions and the tricky words for this fortnight are - didn't, thought, their, shouldn't, great, only.

We are continuing to work on our Mentor Text titled 'My Dunsborough Recount' and we are currently at the 'boxing up' stage of our writing cycle where we adapt and change the text with our own ideas. It has been great to hear the conversations of the children throughout this process and I am looking forward to seeing their good copy come to life in the next few weeks!

Maths

This week we are continuing with our focus on subtraction and how it can link with addition forming fact families. We will be participating in various explicit teaching activities, games and revision opportunities throughout the week to consolidate our understanding of subtraction.

We loved sharing what we learnt from our Place Value assessment on Seesaw last week!

Character Strength of the week

Dear Parents,

currently at OLC we are focusing on modelling and observing different character strengths.

This week we are looking for people who show fairness. "Speak out, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy". Proverbs 31:9

I hope you have a lovely week ahead!
