Term 2, Week 9 and 10 😎😍

 Dear Parents,

Welcome to the final blog for Term 2. I cannot believe how quickly this term has flown by and how much learning we have jam packed into ten weeks 😁

Just a few pieces of information for the upcoming fortnight...

Homework

On Monday we will be sending home the Year Two fluency grid with this fortnights focus sounds and tricky words. Have a look at our blog post titled 'Week 4 Information' which shows you how you can use this at home to increase your child's reading fluency. We have also included all of the spelling lists for your information on the back of the fluency grid. The pink list πŸ’“ is the target for Year Two from our InitiaLit program. Please feel free to use these lists at home to increase your child's spelling abilities. Have a look at our Fluency grids and spelling lists below to see our focus sounds πŸ€“

Learning Intentions

English:

This week we are learning the suffix 'ing' and how when we add 'ing' to the end of a base word we can change its meaning and create a new word.

This fortnight we are reviewing some of the tricky words we have learnt over the semester that upon testing have found the children need more practise. The tricky words for this fortnight are - they, work, thought, because, their, were, who, people, something, what, different, where.

Last week, we completed our published copy of our very own hybrid animal. We had some very interesting animal combinations - The Snarke - shark/snake, The Degladon - dragon/megladon and even a Pengopus - penguin/octopusπŸ‡πŸ―πŸ¨πŸ»πŸ Be sure to ask your child what their hybrid animal is.

IntiaLit:

We have also continued to learn the difference between an imaginative text, informative text and a persuasive text (Check out Term 2 - Week 7 blog for the InitiaLit posters on these 3 different text types)

We have now started to learn all about predicting and how predicting is making a smart guess about what we think will happen in a text, which will help us to understand what we are reading and make us want to read more. We learnt that to be able to successfully predict we need to ask ourselves two questions:
What has happened so far?
What will happen next?
When we ask ourselves these two

Maths

Last week, we began learning about the concept of Chance and how we can describe everyday events by using words like: certain, likely, equal chance, unlikely and impossible. We will continue to explore this for Week 9 and will then revise all the math concepts we have learnt in Semester One.

  • Identify practical activities and everyday events that involve chance. Describe outcomes as ‘likely’ or ‘unlikely’ and identify some events as ‘certain’ or ‘impossible’ (ACMSP047)

Extended Holidays 😎🌞
If you are planning on escaping early, please visit the lovely Fran in the office to fill out an extended leave form. This would be greatly appreciated.

Semester One Reports πŸ“°

Grades and comments are being finalised into next week and formal reports will be sent home in electronic form via SEQTA on the final day of term.

Our Semester One reports grading align with the Western Australian curriculum and achievement standards for Year 2. We encourage you to read the first opening page of the report which explains what each grade letter means in association with the SCSA WA curriculum rather than thinking about the grade letters we used to receive in our schooling years.  A 'C grade' on your child's report is likened to an average achievement grade and relates to the majority of the WA year 2 population achievement/progression level of the curriculum and our OLC reports also include their personal values and attitudes for their learning.

If your child receives a 'C' grade, this is the expected level of achievement.

I am so proud of how far they have personally all come over the semester and their dedication towards achieving individual goals.  Please feel free to contact me via email or in class if you wish to discuss anything at all either this week or early next term about the report or any other matter at all.

Popcorn Party 🍿

Next Friday, (the last day of term) we will be having a Popcorn party across both Year Two classes to celebrate the outstanding work the children have produced this term! As we are trying to be sustainable, can you please send your child in with a small container that we can place their serving of popcorn in or we can use their crunch and sip container.

Cross Country πŸƒ‍♀️πŸƒ‍♂️πŸ‘Ÿ

Congratulations to all the Year Two students who participated in the OLC Cross Country race last week. It was a beautiful winter's day and all of the children brought along their positive attitude. I was so proud of all the children and the way they tried their best even if they weren't the winners on the day. One super proud teacher here!

Thank you all for a wonderful Term 2 and I look forward to another great semester with your children!

Mrs. Wendelin
